Award-winning theatre director Celia Quinn is ready to leave it all, when she discovers a collection of 19th century sonnets about the Biblical characters David and Jonathan. For David, she casts Derrick Lazaro, an accomplished, politically active, gay actor. For Jonathan, she casts Zach Johnson, young, promising, and conservative. As they prepare the play’s premiere, the men’s relationship explores that of David and Jonathan’s, and Celia discovers the story behind the sonnets. Part classical tragedy, part slap-stick comedy, but, at its heart, Song of the Bow is a romantic comedy. Perhaps even more exciting is the opportunity the play presents to promote conversation between distant communities.
Wayne Harrel - Wayne's play Song of the Bow was a finalist for the Oregon Literary Arts Award. His musical Look at Us Now (music by Craig Bidondo) was nominated Best Original Play by the Portland Drama Critics Circle. His play Making Choices won the TADA! New Play Award, and Bright and Wild won the Ensemble Theatre Playwriting Contest.
THE CAST
John Wesley Shipp (Derrick Lazaro) On Broadway John played Gerry in Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa and Jake in Harvey Fierstein's Safe Sex. He is best known as Mitch Leery, Dawson's father in the television show Dawson's Creek. Shipp also played Kelly Nelson on Guiding Light. He won an Emmy for playing Douglas Cummings on As the World Turns and a guest artist Emmy for his work in Santa Barbara. He also played the Flash in CBS's short-lived but critically-acclaimed series The Flash and he played Lucky on NBC's Sisters.
Nora Mae Lyng (Celia Quinn) On Broadway Nora played Jack's Mother in the recent revival of Into the Woods, Fraulein Kost in the Revival of Cabaret, Madame Thenardier in Les Miserables, Claire in Amour, Mother Rabbit in Wind in the Willows, and Sylvia in Three Men on a Horse. Off-broadway she starred in the original cast of Forbidden Broadway.
Will Triplett (Zach Johnson) Will studied his BFA in Acting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has performed in the 1940s Radio Hour, Taming of the Shrew, Biloxi Blues, and The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavvi. He played Josh Davidson in the national television drama Palmetto Pointe. He has guest starred in Law and Order and Law and Order: SVU and recently completed his second feature film Dismal.
